Chapter Eighteen

Wyatt

I know I may be being too hard on Arianna, but she knew . She knew how big of a deal it was to me to be in that ambulance with Parker. Sure, if she was worried about Parker, it didn’t make sense to wait for me, but she shouldn’t have risked Parker’s health like that. Maybe it was just a broken arm this time, even with the height Parker bragged about, but next time, what if—well, there won’t be a next time.

“You can’t keep me from going to preschool,” she snapped.

“Parker, I’m your father. I’m doing what’s best for you.”

“What’s best for me is to keep seeing Ms. Arianna.”

“You got hurt,” I said.

“Everyone gets hurt sometimes. I’m the one that jumped off the swing.”

“You don’t even know how to swing. She was pushing you.”

“No, someone else was pushing me and—”

The doctor came in and said, “Well, since everything looks fine and you have that swanky new cast, I think you’re ready to go home.”

“I’m not going home; I’m going back to preschool.”

The doctor looks at me. “She may want a day off, the meds will wear off soon, and everything will be pretty tender, but she’ll—”

“She’s not going back,” I interrupt.

“Great. I’m sure she’ll be ready within the next few days.”

“She’s never going back.”

I can tell by the doctor’s face that he thinks I’m overreacting, but he’s not saying anything, so I’m grateful for him. “Well, you two are free to go whatever you decide.”

“I don’t want to go with him,” Parker snaps, and I can see how he looks between us.

“Listen, Parker,” I say. “Let’s just go home and we can talk about it there. I know you will miss your friends, but maybe we can invite some of them over.”

She pauses for a moment. “For sleepovers?”

“Sure, if you’ll come home and stop complaining about daycare so much, we can have the boys and Beth over for sleepovers.”

“I’ll think about it,” she says tiredly, but I can tell there really is a lot of thought going into it when she nestles back into her pillow.

“She’ll probably rest now that all that is out of her system,” the doctor explains.

“She could use some rest,” I say, carrying her out of the car when she says she’s tired.

I call Hudson on the way home. “Do you think Lace can stay with Parker while I work tomorrow, and then the boys can come to stay at my house for the night?”

“What’s wrong?”

“Can you do it?”

“Not unless you tell me what’s wrong.”

“Parker broke her arm.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Hudson says, and I can tell he means it. “I know how scary those sorts of things are, but luckily she is young and healthy, so she should have a complete recovery.” He pauses. “Why does that mean Lace have to watch her? Please tell me you’re not pulling her out of preschool?”

“They let her break her arm!”

“It’s not that simple, and you know it,” Hudson says. “They didn’t want anything to happen, and I’m sure they weren’t negligent.
